What Is Sperm Morphology?
This is one of the most frustrating moments in male fertility testing. The numbers look okay. Sperm count? Normal. Motility? Decent. And yet, conception still isn't happening, and no one seems to have an answer.
Then the doctor mentions one more term — morphology — and suddenly there's a new piece of the puzzle nobody had considered.
Sperm morphology, the shape and structure of sperm, is one of the most overlooked factors in fertility conversations. It doesn't get nearly as much attention as count or motility, yet it can be the deciding factor in whether a sperm cell can actually fertilize an egg.
Morphology refers to the size and shape of individual sperm cells, specifically:
